Critical Care

Our Multidisciplinary Team Approach
Significant Results

Saint Mary’s adult Critical Care Services provide care across the continuum from the Intensive Care Unit through the Intermediate Care Units. These areas are located on a single floor of the hospital to maximize the efficiency of the multidisciplinary team members. As we complete the Hauenstein Center in early 2009, our Critical Care Services will transition to a brand new 32-bed private unit equipped with state of the art technology and support for a truly healing environment. As part of Trinity Health, we participate in numerous state and national performance improvement activities including the statewide Keystone ICU Improvement Project.

Our Multidisciplinary Team Approach. Working in collaboration with the nursing staff are board certified medical and surgical intensivists and cardiologists. Multidisciplinary rounds occur daily. We encourage individual and team development, as well as patient safety in many other ways, including:
  • Rapid Response Team RN Leader
  • Clinical Advancement System (CAS) Level III nurses
  • A Clinical Nurse Specialist
  • Easy access to a Critical Care Educator
  • Daily multidisciplinary rounds for all patients
  • Palliative Care and weekly ethics conferences
  • Online AACN ECHO modules for critical care orientation
  • Professional Certification support
  • Holistic Therapists, i.e. acupuncture, massage, energy
  • High percentage of CCRN certified RNs among eligible ICU staff
Significant Results. We have found that our combination of innovative technologies and patient-centered techniques has some pretty impressive outcomes. For instance, our central line and ventilator associated pneumonia rates are well below national benchmarks. Our Rapid Response Team includes an RN from the Intensive Care Unit and a Registered Respiratory Therapist. This team has been honored with the 2006 Gallup Award for Healthcare Excellence and the 2006 Trinity Health Award for Excellence in Innovation. We supported the replication of our model within other Trinity hospitals resulting in one of our sister ministry organizations receiving the 2007 Trinity Award for Rapid Replication of a best practice. We strive to deliver excellent nursing care and an exceptional experience for our patients and their families in a healing environment.
