The Hauenstein Center

RN’s who are looking for a dynamic environment that encompasses a diversity of cultures and age groups, will find Saint Mary’s ED and Trauma Department challenging and infinitely rewarding. Our main 25-bed, Level II trauma unit with certified Stroke Center, and our six-bed Urgent Care unit are both fully CPOE-equipped for convenient electronic medical record keeping and bedside documentation. In addition, both facilities offer excellent cross-training opportunities for RNs who wish gain comprehensive knowledge and experience of the entire department. And, because our primary mission is excellent, efficient emergent care, we adhere to a thorough integration of national standards, a multidisciplinary team approach to patient care, and a strong emphasis on continuing education, evidence-based practice and professional growth.

Team Approach
Our multidisciplinary team of certified emergency physicians and RNs manages over 48,000 cases per year. While the cases are wide-ranging, with patients from every walk of life, one of the most exciting elements of our work is our integrated team model. Here, collaboration among physicians, specialists, technicians and RNs is more than just a concept, it’s an essential part of our daily lives. We encourage the interdisciplinary exchange of knowledge and experience. To that end, we have established and support two staff-led, unit-based practice and process councils, so that all voices are heard and are capable of making changes in partnership with leadership.

Education/Mentoring
Another of our primary objectives is to continually challenge and inspire our RNs to higher levels of personal achievement. In fact, while we embrace new graduates, we require all ED RNs to seek specialized certification in Trauma Nurse Core Certification (TNCC), Emergency Nurse Pediatric Certification (ENPC) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). We support them in this endeavor by providing a means to seek these specialty certifications. In addition to supporting nursing education with emergency-specific topics, we also promote general nursing education. We facilitate the growth of our entering RNs in a number of other ways as well, including:
  • Individualized orientation
  • An assigned mentor for two years
  • Readily available Nurse Educators and a Clinical Nurse Specialist to aid with nurse education and practice
  • A thriving Clinical Advancement System
Southwest Urgent Care
Beautifully situated on Saint Mary’s Southwest Campus, this six-bed unit provides comprehensive urgent care services for adult and pediatric populations. Southwest Urgent Care is fully equipped to handle any medical situation with the same expert care as the Main Campus Emergency Department. RNs here receive the same benefits and training as other ED RNs, including unique cross-training opportunities at our main trauma center.

The Hauenstein Center
In early 2009 The Hauenstein Center will open its doors to the public. This 45-bed state-of-the-art, facility will feature all private treatment rooms, a helipad and key in-house patient services such as a radiology unit, full lab and pharmacy.
