Our general medicine area is an ideal setting for RNs who enjoy diversity in their work. A specialty in and of itself, the Medical Unit is a fast-paced environment that serves adults during the acute phase of illness. This unit offers a multitude of learning experiences. RNs here not only see a tremendous variety of patients and diagnoses, they also have the opportunity to work with a broad range of experts in many fields. Functioning as the eyes, ears and hands of the physicians, medical RNs are so in tune with their patients that they have the primary role of being their advocates in the health care system and well as preventing and detecting early signs of complications.
This unit offers both resident teaching and non-teaching services, so our RNs work with a broad range of providers, from Family and Internal Medicine interns and residents to attending physicians and hospitalists. Graduate nurses as well as experienced nurses are welcomed on this unit. Due to the complexity of the patients, nurses usually quickly develop expertise in caring for a variety of patient populations.
Our Environment. We continually foster a supportive environment that places everyone on level footing, supports the interdisciplinary exchange of knowledge among staff and creates a dynamic energy that makes our workplace vital and free of the typical constraints of a hierarchal setting. Our multidisciplinary team—comprised of RNs, respiratory therapists, dieticians, pharmacists, case managers, physical and occupational therapists—functions as a highly collaborative unit providing all patients with individualized treatment plans. In addition, we set a strong emphasis on continuing education, evidence-based practice, a healthy work environment, a fully integrated model of care and professional growth opportunities—initiatives that not only enrich and challenge our staff, but also ensure an efficient, safe experience for our patients and their families.
